240sx Boost Your KA24 Cheap

Many people who first get into the Nissan 240sx will notice the S Chassis has great handling, looks pretty good, but lacks something. Power… The ka24e and ka24de although have pretty good pull for being what they are, they fall on there face when it comes down to it. Yea, you can slap a intake and buy some EBAY headers and exhaust and think your gained a lot of power! The truth is you didn’t Intake, Headers, and Exhaust sound great and usually are, but in some cases you will lose power down low for power up high or vise versa. What I mean is you might lose mid RPM power but increase your lower RPM power. The ka24e and ka24de are not bag engines, they just need something more.

Putting a turbo on a 240sx can easily be done in a day, My friends and I did it in a few hours with random turbo parts laying around my garage. It is very easy to throw a turbo on and ride out, BUT there are some short cuts people take that can lead to huge headaches and just a not so cool time. These days with the price of swaps being so cheap, SR20DET and RB20DET are going for pretty cheap where I live,”Florida”. You can get a swap for less than $1,600 and have boost in your 240sx in no time. If swaps are already turbo and cheaper, why not go with them you might be asking. That’s simple, the swap might be $1,600 but you do need more parts to finish it. By the time you are done you will be in it $2,000+ in most cases. Don’t get me wrong, I own SR’s too, they are fun, but just lack the power down low. When you put a turbo on a KA you can be conservative and gain 60-80 more HP and Torque, or if you know what your doing you can get well over 150 more HP and Torque.

240sx Turbo Parts and What’s Needed

All of this goes for both KA24E and KA24DE engines. This is also for your low budget builds for those who just want to get a little bit more power and don’t have the money to go bigger.

TURBO: Here is the heart of it all, I suggest getting a Garrett T25 turbo from someone up upgraded there SR20det. The reason: these can be picked up for less than $100 and cost less than $50 to rebuild if needed. These can turn your 240sx into a rocket ship! the 2.4L kA24 can spool these puppies in no time! $100

Turbo Manifold: Let me say this first, DO NOT BUY EBAY MANIFOLDS!!! I have worked with so many of them from friends to no shocker have fitment issues. Now I did say this was for those with a low budget, but this is important, go ahead and buy a EBAY t25 turbo, that’s fine, they will work for what they are, but the manifold NEEDS to be that of better quality. For this I suggest ENJUKU RACING and there KA24DE Turbo Manifold. Now you need a t2 Flange Turbo Manifold. The T2 is the flange style of the turbo, this is where the manifold bolts to you head, and turbo then bolts to it. I have had GREAT experiences using the ISIS T2 bottom mount manifold, this Turbo Manifold for the 240sx Clears everything, A+ fitment, and looks pretty well made.  $200

Turbo Lines: Now that we have turbo and manifold, we need to supply the turbo with oil and a way for it to return back to the engine. Now you can go to your local hose shop and have them make you a custom oil feed line. Many Remove there factory oil sensor, add a T and thread the sensor back in with the T and put the new line on the T. The other end of the line goes to the top of the T25 turbo. An alternative, and the method I used, if I bought a GlowShift Oil Sandwich plate. With this you unscrew your oil filter, and put on this plate and then install your filter again. This plate has extra taps on it to get oil temp, oil pressure, and more from it. It has a lot of uses and makes it a lot easier. Now to return the oil, use the factory metal return line on the turbo, go to your local auto parts store and buy a weld on male AN fitting. I just took a punch, and popped a whole on my oil pan, and welded the fitting on, buy a 90° or 45° fitting and hose to connect the 2 sides.  The sandwich plate is around $30. and Fitting with hose should be less than $20. Total cost for oil supply should be $75 total or less.

240sx FMIC “Front Mount Intercooler”: Now this is probably the most wanted part besides the power a turbo gives. Everyone LOVES to see a HUGE intercooler up front! With this, I say go ahead and buy an EBAY kit, they are cheap, and the only thing you need it to do it hold pressure. You can buy CXracing or go with ISIS, CX usually run from 200-240 and ISIS usually runs 350-450. I suggest CXracing since you will be saving a lot of money with both being good quality.

Now with all this being said, there are some things I did not mention you need. You can buy a regular sr20 turbo elbow that goes from turbo to downpipe. You will also need a downpipe to go with this. You will need a BOV ” Blow Off Valve” this release pressure in the piping, Makes the cool swooshing sounds.

Things I suggest: Get an ISIS 255 Fuel pump, or Walbro 255 on average these range from 60-75$. If you plan on running 6-7 PSI your injectors will be fine and tune also. One thing I am religious about, is a WIDEBAND. These are expensive but VERY NEEDED. This gauge will let you know if you are running lean and help you save from damaging your engine.
