S13 240SX Buyer Inspection Guide

What to inspect before buying a 1989–1994 U.S.-market 240SX or related S13 project car.

Body and structure

Look past paint and body kits. Inspect frame rails, rocker/pinch-weld areas, tension-rod mounting areas, front core support, strut towers, rear subframe mounting areas, hatch/spare-tire well and evidence of pull marks or poorly repaired collision damage. Uneven seams and improvised welding deserve investigation.

Drift and modification history

A drift-used car can be excellent if maintained, but repeated curb/impact loads and hurried repairs leave clues: bent arms, mismatched suspension hardware, damaged subframe pickup points, welded differential behavior, cut harnesses, hydraulic-handbrake plumbing, missing interior fasteners and unusual tire wear. Judge workmanship, not stickers.

Powertrain and wiring

Verify what engine and transmission are actually installed, what ECU controls them, whether the harness is labeled/documented, and whether charging, gauges, fans and diagnostic functions operate. On swaps, ask for receipts or part numbers for mounts, clutch, driveshaft and fuel-system components.

Test drive

Watch cold start, idle quality, charging voltage, clutch engagement, transmission noise, differential noise, steering return-to-center, brake pull, cooling temperature and vibration under acceleration/deceleration. A short test drive cannot prove durability, but it can expose several expensive problems.

Verify the exact car

Chassis condition, donor version, aftermarket geometry and local legal requirements vary. Measure your car and use the correct factory/component documentation before fabrication or safety-critical work.
