How to use power targets responsibly

Practical context

A horsepower tier is useful only if it changes the build plan. Moving from a mild street target to a sustained high-power target increases fuel mass demand, turbo/compressor flow, cylinder pressure, heat rejection, clutch and differential load, tire requirement and the importance of data logging. Treat the number as a system requirement rather than a badge.

Wheel horsepower is also test-dependent. Different dynos, correction methods, tire pressure, gear choice and temperature can produce different numbers from the same car. Use a consistent test method when comparing changes and size critical systems with reasonable margin rather than to the last reported dyno digit.

For fuel planning, use the injector and fuel-flow calculators with a conservative BSFC and duty-cycle target. For drivetrain planning, ask whether the car sees transient street pulls or repeated clutch kicks/track laps; torque spikes and heat cycles often determine life more than peak power alone.
